IHI Launches Partnership with JERA Asia for Ammonia Utilization in Malaysian Thermal Power Plants to expand the Ammonia Value Chain

IHI Corporation announced today that Singapore-based IHI Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd. has signed a memorandum of understanding with JERA Asia Pte. Ltd to advocate deploying and expanding the use of low carbon fuel such as ammonia in order to decarbonize local thermal power plants in Malaysia. JERA Asia is a subsidiary of JERA Co., Inc.

IHI and JERA are conducting projects to achieve a 20% ammonia co-firing rate at Unit 4 of JERA’s Hekinan Thermal Power Station and to raise that rate above 50%, which are supported by New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization. They will present recommendations to help Malaysia to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 45% from 2005 levels by 2030 and make the nation carbon neutral by 2050. IHI and JERA also seek to also expand the deployment of the technology like ammonia co-firing in other Southeast Asian countries.

The cumulative capacity of boilers that IHI has delivered to Malaysia to date is 7,100 megawatts. As part of efforts to help Malaysia reach its decarbonization goals, IHI embarked on a project in 2021 with a subsidiary of Petroliam Nasional Berhad, a Malaysian state-owned entity popularly known as Petronas, and a subsidiary of Tenaga Nasional Berhad, the nation’s biggest power utility, to explore applying ammonia co-firing technology at coal-fired power plants and setting up a supply chain for carbon-free ammonia. IHI is also participating in studies to establish green ammonia supply chains in Australia and other countries, and is developing value chain proposals covering fuel ammonia production through utilization.

IHI will leverage IHI Asia Pacific’s collaboration to present specific ways to reach carbon neutrality worldwide and across Southeast Asia and foster shifts to sustainable energy. Through the demonstration of utilizing e company will also present diverse models for using carbon neutral fuels, including fuel ammonia, IHI will seeks to help swiftly commercialize their carbon neutral fuels, including fuel ammonia, and their adoption for early realization of a carbon neutral across the economies and reduce environmental impacts by providing high-quality infrastructure.
